MRL #069- The Room Where It Happens

Today was “Cleaning Day” in the Revenue household.

Thanks to my 9 year old daughter, our playlist for today’s cleaning sesh was a steady stream of Taylor Swift and the Hamilton soundtrack.

Unless you’ve been living under your desk for the last decade…

You’ve undoubtedly attended, or at least heard songs from the hit Broadway musical, Hamilton.

I’m no fan of men running around rapping in tights…

But, even I’m a sucker for a good beat when it’s clean up time.

So, anyways…

As I was sweeping…

I heard one of the songs from the soundtrack I actually forgot about.

It’s called “The Room Where It Happens.”

Starring Leslie Odom Jr. as Aaron Burr, the musical number explains the Compromise of 1790.

In the song, Burr (Hamilton’s political and personal rival)…

Enviously fumes over the fact that Alexander Hamilton “was in the room where it happened”…

A secret back room deal with Thomas Jefferson and James Madison…

And he was not.

Herein lies the lesson…

Proximity is Power

Like Hamilton…

If you want to succeed in your endeavors it’s imperative that you too are “in the room where it happens”.

Cheesy segue, I know…

But, stick with me.

All to often, we as Producers find ourselves out on an island.

Sometimes, it’s due to a lack of support from our agency leadership…

Sometimes, it’s of our own making.

Either way…

It still sucks.

I would know, I’ve been there.

The good news is…

We don’t have to stay there.

Believe it or not…

There Are People Who Want To See You Succeed

I’m one of them.

Hell…

That’s what I made Max Revenue HQ for.

Inside, we’ve got nearly 500 Producers sharing tips, tricks, and best practices with each other.

Even though many of us are competitors.

But, hawking Max Revenue HQ isn’t what this newsletter is about.

I’m just making the point that…

Although cutthroat…

This industry has a lot of good people in it.

Men and women who are in the trenches like you, who know how hard it truly is, and who are willing to help.

Like Hamilton, you’ve just got to have the stones to “be in the room”.

Meaning…

Reach out to a colleague and pick their brain…

Befriend a senior Producer and ask for a weekly meeting…

Go on appointments with willing Producers.

Whatever, you have to do.

And for God’s sake…

If someone has agreed to selflessly give their time to you…

Take them up on it.

Preferably, in person!

Do what my high school basketball coach used to tell us to do on defense…

Grab em’ by the waistband and follow him til’ he gets on the bus to go home…

If you have to.

Be There… In The Room… Where It’s Happening!

That’s where you’ll truly see how the sausage gets made.

Granted, you don’t have to have a mentor in this business to be successful…

But it’s sure a helluva lot easier if you do.

As we say in Max Revenue HQ…

A rising tide raises all ships.

This business is not a zero sum game.

There’s plenty to go around for everybody…

And there’s plenty of people willing to help.

You just have to be in the room where it happens.

That’s the lesson for today.

See you next Sunday.

Kick ass take names,

Maximus F Revenue IV
